男女之间提议分手，说It will be better for the both of us.（这对我们两人都好一点）。读者对这句英文有没有一点疑惑？按正宗英文both之前不应用the，例如：Both of us heard him say he was dissatisfied.（我们两人都听见他说不满意）。The both of us口头上有时可以听到，但绝对不宜见于文字。
假如不说both of us等，可以说we both或us both，例如：(1) We both heard him say he was dissatisfied。(2) It will be better for us both。Both of us、both of them等不可改为both us、both them；然则both of the workers（那两个工人）、both of his hands（他一双手）可不可以改为both the workers、both his hands？答案是‘可以’，而且没有of的说法一般认为较好，也较为常用，例如：Both (of) the workers are here.（两个工人都在这里）。换言之，both之后必须用of带出us、them等代名词，但both之后假如是一复数名词，则不用of会好一点。 又both the workers可不可以略作both workers？答案也是‘可以’，而且不用the是较常见的说法：Both (the) workers are here。
留意both A and B（甲与乙两者都）这个说法，both之后不可用of，例如：Both Tom and Mary are not sure what should be done.（汤姆、玛丽两人都不知道该怎么办）。
